About the Department

The Department of Anaesthesiology, PGIMS, UHS Rohtak came into existence in the year 1963 under the dynamic leadership of Dr. G.L. Kamra. Later on, it was headed by Dr. Balbir Chhabra (twice), Dr. K.K. Gombar, Dr. Sarla Hooda and Dr. Savita Saini. Presently, under the Headship of Dr. Suresh Kumar Singhal, Department of Anaesthesiology, PGIMS, UHS Rohtak plays a key role in providing healthcare facilities in our hospital. The Department of Anaesthesiology is one of the largest Departments of PGIMS presently comprising of 42 faculty members, 19 Senior Residents and a yearly intake of 44 post graduate students each year (122 total).Many faculty position and senior resident posts are lying vacant. The department has to its credit numerous international and national publications. Faculty of Department has the pride of attending many international and national conferences as faculty/guest speaker/judge/chairperson/panelist and otherwise in all forms. The department has also involved in various research projects. Faculty of department is examiner to various universities throughout India.The department also boost of state of art machinery and equipment/latest gadgets, medicines, consumables. Teaching schedule of post graduate is structured as per NMC guidelines and logbook by students properly maintained. The department is also fully equipped with wi-fi and computers for usage by the office staff/faculty/residents. The department has developed its departmental library and museum which is worth visiting. The department has a pivotal role in care of patients during COVID-19 pandemic which is well appreciated.
On regular basis we deliver anaesthesia services for the following:

  • Elective and emergency surgeries (in Trauma centre, Mother & child health (MCH) centre, emergency OT) of all surgical speciality departments.
  • Elective and emergency surgeries (in Trauma centre, Mother & child health (MCH) centre, emergency OT) of all surgical speciality departments.
  • Super specialty OTs like Neurosurgery, Urology, Burn and Plastic surgery, Paediatric surgery and Onco-surgery.
  • Run daily OPDs- Pre-Anaesthesia check-up (PAC) clinic.
  • Special clinic- Pain clinic, on all days, in OPD complex
  • Anaesthesia in remote areas for out of OT procedures like ECT, MRI and CT suites.
  • department delivers critical care services through 3 Intensive Care Units at present Trauma ICU (21 Bedded) and Respiratory ICU (8 Bedded) and new modular ICU in the New OT complex which is 34 bedded (20+8+6).
  • From March 2020 onwards, when COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, the Department of Anaesthesiology played a major leadership role of being the “Frontline COVID warriors” in handling the Covid patients and has been providing round the clock, dedicated services to patients in Covid ICUs, as and when needed.
  • Conducting training programme regarding “Infection control practices” for healthcare workers including doctors, nurses, OT masters, OT technicians, OT assistants, sanitation workers, bearers and security guards.
  • During these training classes, demonstration of proper method of “donning” and “doffing” of personal protective equipment (PPEs), N-95 masks and method of hand hygiene, biomedical waste handling was done. the healthcare workers (HCWs) were also provided the necessary motivation to work in the COVID 19 areas.
  • Operation theatre for COVID 19 patients were also started along with SOPs for COVID OTs to minimise risk of transmission of infection to the HCWs.
  • Imparting resuscitation skills to Doctors, OT Nursing staff, B.Sc. OT students and support staff from time to time
  • Department also provides assistance to team in Ambulance services deputed for VIP duties as per government protocols
  • Imparting teaching to post graduate, undergraduate and BSc OT students.
  • Participation and organizing workshops, CMEs and conferences. Our department was felicitated on 15th august 2020 as “Frontline Corona Warriors, for our exceptional services during COVID pandemic, by the Ld. Vice Chancellor, UHS, Rohtak. Our Head of the department, Sr. Professors, Professors, Associate professors, Assistant Professors, Senior residents and Junior Residents were also felicitated for being “COVID warriors” by the Indian society of Anaesthesiologists
